SUVs have dominated the automotive world for a few years. They gobbled up minivans and undermined the dominance of sedans across the auto market. With the transition to electric vehicles they will continue to multiply, although it is curious that we advocate that electric vehicles be more ecological and that at the same time we put batteries in heavier vehicles, less aerodynamic and that consume more than the sedans from which they usually come out. take the technical basis… But that’s the way things are and manufacturers are surfing this wave of SUVs by introducing more and more new models.
full of SUVs
The Stellantis group, born from the association of the PSA and FCA groups, has within its brands a large number of SUVs with the Jeep brand, of course, but also with Peugeot and its emblematic models that are the Peugeot 2008, 3008 and 5008 ( and the new sedan-SUV 408) And these are not the only Stellantis SUVs as other brands such as Alfa Romeo, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Opel have one or more vehicles of this type in their range.
The Peugeot 2008 lends its technical base
Despite having a large SUV division within it, Stellantis always wants more and the group has decided to hit the urban SUV segment hard. This is how three urban SUVs are expected to arrive in the coming months. So that the brands can produce these models while limiting development costs as much as possible, a common technical base, that of the Peugeot 2008. This is the e-CMP platform that can house thermal and electric motors, because it is necessary to provide the future and the transition All-electric planned for some of the group’s brands. Therefore, DS Automobiles should go fully electric in 2024, that is, we will keep the hybrid engines for a while as long as there are no more new thermal engines. For Jeep it will be 2027, for Fiat 2027, Opel 2028… But beware, this applies to Europe, because in other markets internal combustion engines will continue to have the right to be sold, and this after 2035 (the date on which thermals will be prohibited for sale in Europe*). In fact, it’s hard to see Jeep going all-electric by 2025 on the North American continent, which is a huge amount of sales for this manufacturer.
For Jeep A Second City SUV
Let’s stop by Jeep for a moment to talk about the new 2008 Peugeot-based urban SUV. And we already know what it’s going to be like, as Stellantis revealed photos of a concept car earlier in the year. It is a small model of which we have practically no more information than these two images. We know, however, that it will be in the range below the Jeep Renegade, an urban SUV like this, which will only have two-wheel drive, although for a while a 4×4 project with two electric motors was proposed, but that this project could finally be implemented in the replacement for the Renegade. This Jeep “Baby” will be produced at the group’s factory in Tychy, Poland. If this is the first 100% electric Jeep, there will also be combustion engines under the hood of this model. In addition, the prototypes currently undergoing development tests are equipped with internal combustion engines.
It is also in Tychy that the other Stellantis urban SUV will be produced, which will be destined for the Alfa Romeo brand. The one we now call Brennero, but which could be called Palade, will also take care of a Peugeot 2008 base as well as its thermal and electric motors. Thermal engines, because between now and 2035, there will always be the possibility of selling thermal engines. Under the hood there will therefore be a 1.2 PureTech gasoline engine that should be supported by a microhybridization system to consume less and obtain a reduction in CO2 emissions. While the Jeep “Baby” will arrive in the first half of 2023, the Alfa Romeo Brennero will only arrive in 2024.
Third and last urban SUV produced in Poland, it is a Fiat model that should take up the style of the Centoventi concept car. In addition, in the documents transmitted during the presentation of the concept car at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, there is an illustration of a fighter model on this Centoventi base that could correspond to this future model. For Fiat, as for Jeep, it is a second urban SUV since it will come to be below the Fiat 500 X. A Fiat 500 X that will change generation in 2024. It will have to gain a few centimeters along the way and will adopt a Peugeot 2008 platform. technical base will be the one that will serve the new urban SUV and the future Centoventi family since it is a true family model. In fact, Fiat will replace the Panda and as mini city cars are no longer popular, the replacement for the Panda will be this Centoventi, which will be a versatile city car. It will exist in city bodywork and perhaps considered the heir to the Fiat Punto (it could also borrow this name), it will also exist in city SUVs. An urban SUV that could be the first model of this new family of practical and low-cost models and that could reach the market in 2024.
With the multiplication of urban SUVs, the Stellantis group wants to become a key player in the sector and take market share from some of its competitors such as the Renault Captur and Nissan Juke, but also from the Volkswagen trio: Volkswagen T-Cross, Taigo and Barter.
*Frans Timmermans, Vice President of the Commission in charge of the Green Deal, indicated that the Commission will take stock of plug-in hybrid engines in 2026, to see if there is a possibility of maintaining this technology after 2035. Synthetic fuels will also be considered in this moment.
