Alerte arnaque : ce nouveau SMS peut vider votre compte bancaire, soyez vigilants !

More than 70,000 Android devices have been infected in France due to a simple SMS. This new phishing campaign is therefore effective and has managed to play on the credulity of some consumers. Behind this scam lies a group of Chinese hackers, no doubt well aware of the amazing power of phishing. Let’s go back to the facts. We tell you everything so that they don’t deceive you too.

What is phishing?

It’s a scam based on a childishly simple, but devilishly effective system.. Scammers are simply pretending to be an official organization. The victims believe they are in the right place and are guided. They end by indicating their personal data. And it’s already too late. This information is in the hands of malicious people who sometimes empty the accounts of the victims.

Official agencies often issue press releases to indicate that they are being targeted by criminals. This is the case of the Café or Correos, frequently copied to allow fraudsters to recover sums of money.

To give you an example of phishing, you have no doubt faced incessant calls, emails and/or SMS related to the CPF.. In fact, the scammers are going crazy. Their objective is simple, they want to regain access to your account to suck all the euros out of it. In order not to fall into the trap, start with a simple observation, valid for all scams.

SMS: how does the scam work?

Your package has been shipped. Check it out and receive it“. This is the message you receive. Inevitably, since many people order on the Internet, hackers sometimes just fall. If you haven’t ordered anything, you can probably think of a scam. But if you are waiting for a package, you can click on the famous URL that is offered. But this link is stuck. And it allows the hacker group to launch several data collection campaigns, in Europe and in France. In fact, when you click on the link, the page offers an update to the browser you are using. But it is actually malware that it installs.

This software is aimed exclusively at France as the page shows an error message if you open it outside the French borders. How does it really work? It is simple. Once downloaded, the MoqHao software collects information about the device that has been tricked. This allows you to send booby-trapped text messages from the phone that was hacked.

We tracked down one of the numbers used to send phishing text messages, it was an average person whose phone was hijacked without their realizing it.” explains an engineer to Numerama.

What to do when you receive a suspicious SMS?

If the engineers discovered this well-executed scam, they still don’t know precisely what its purpose is. However, they have their own ideas about it: We believe they are financially motivated. The group steals a lot of data from people, but we still don’t know what the final interest is. It can be the reselling of data, a first act before another more sophisticated step “.

What to do, as an average citizen, not to be fooled? Just follow a very simple rule. Never click on links received by SMS or email. If you’re really expecting a package, go directly to the carrier’s site to see where it is.

Phishing campaigns are well designed, but they have flaws. A carrier never asks you, while the package is being sent, to give more data to receive the package.

As a general rule, when in doubt, go to sites you think are being copied by scammers on your own. At least that way I’m sure you won’t be fooled. You will stay away from malware.
