game news Meet Your Maker: When Mario Maker meets Doom, from the creators of Dead by Daylight
Surprise ! While studios often wait for the big summer fairs like E3/Summer Game Fest or gamescom to announce their new projects, Behavior Interactive doesn’t let any calendar dictate and presents Meet Your Maker. It must be said that the studio behind Dead by Daylight surely needed to be in the spotlight to spend more time on this fun title with an original principle that mixes level creation and action on all levels. It’s going to be darling.
Are you building or raiding?
On a dying world, Guardians go to war to collect the planet’s most coveted resource: pure genetic material (GenMat). Some build deadly fortresses to protect it, others infiltrate enemy bases to retrieve it. Meet Your Maker is described by its creators as a futuristic build-and-raid FPS, where each level is designed by a player from the community.. In fact, the user is invited to discover two very different types of game. When playing as the Mastermind, the player aims to create twisted levels filled with devious traps and warring enemies to prevent human adventurers from retrieving the GenMat. When he is in the shoes of a warrior, he must travel through the Outposts created by the other Masterminds to recover the famous genetic material.
Representative of a rare genre that Behavior Interactive describes as “Builder-Raider”, Meet Your Maker combines the tools of a level editor with the fast-paced action of an FPS. On the one hand the reflection, on the other the challenge. Thanks to this system based entirely on the talents of its future community, Behavior Interactive makes sure that no dungeon is the same. Unlike software with asymmetric gameplay like Resident Evil: Resistance, Meet Your Maker doesn’t bring the attackers and Mastermind together in real time. When a dungeon is published, it is offered to people in the community as a 100% PvE experience. The creator can then check the number of kills in their level, where they happened (like in Mario Maker), and watch replays to check how dangerous their build is.
In his sanctuary, the player has everything he needs to start an adventure as a Mastermind or as a raider. This is also where you can buy temporary power-ups and where traps can be customized by adding mods. It’s important to note that both crafting and raiding are accessible to up to two players in cooperation., just to design or survey levels with the best of your comrades. However, at this time, we don’t know if Meet Your Maker will be cross-play/cross-platform.
So, as a Mastermind, your goal is to create the deadliest Outpost you can imagine, laying a bunch of traps and a shovelful of monsters. The only limit? Do not exceed capacity gauge. This mode will bring out the puzzle that lies dormant in you and make you rediscover your old Dungeon Keeper reflexes, when you had to use tricks to slow down the heroes that came to plunder the heart of the dungeon. The Meet Your Maker interface is divided into five sections that group together everything the creator needs to build a world with blocks, traps, monsters, items, and stickers.. During the demo we were able to admire walls that launch arrows, hammers, rakes, mechanisms that shoot flamethrowers or even hatches that launch bombs. Budding creators will be happy to create deadly trompe-l’oeil, narrow corridors with ceilings covered in traps, or even dangerous arenas that are home to bloodthirsty monsters. On the side of the bestiary, we could see well-armed bipedal creatures, more or less imposing, as well as flying enemies.
The more players die in the fortress, the more rewards the Mastermind earns. The architecture of a level changes by placing blocks of different shapes (cubic, triangular) and different textures with configurable colors. If we go by the demo we were able to see, creating a level looks like part of LEGO with interlocking bricks. The decoration is not far behind with a multitude of elements to apply (pipes, fans, lamps, etc.) in order to make your Outpost unique. Block after block, trap after trap, the user designs the tower of terror of his dreams that will have the mission of becoming the nightmare of the adventurers who venture there.. A fun little feature is a route recording system for NPCs to pre-record custom patrol routes that can surprise looters. Enough to deal heavy damage with a flying enemy, as we saw in our demo. Several social features are planned that will allow you to rate your favorite dungeons or watch video replays of adventurers who have visited our outposts.
Raid mode die and retry
As a raider, the objective is to inspect the fortresses built by other players to recover the genetic material, and then leave.. To do this, the player has the possibility to customize the abilities of his character to adapt to the challenges that await him. In the event of death, you are sent back to where you started and must start over. Fortunately, in cooperation, the survivor has a chance to heal their friend on the ground, which softens the challenge a bit. From what we could see, the gameplay of the Raid mode resembles that of a classic FPS with jumping, shooting, melee, grenade throwing and peeking to see what is hiding on the other side of a wall.
We don’t rate Meet Your Maker as Fast-FPS because the object of the game in Raid mode is to carefully advance so as not to trigger a trap, while counting ultra-limited ammo.. If you hate rummaging through every corner of a maze to find an object, you should know that the robots point the way to find the GenMat. Once the resource is collected, it triggers the script for new traps. Therefore, it is necessary to be particularly attentive when your hands rest on the precious sesame. The lethal mechanisms are of course destructible, they also bring XP and ammunition. The hardest part is sniffing out their presence before they fire. History To facilitate progression, the warriors have a grappling hook, a decidedly essential accessory in action games in recent years.
Meet Your Maker is announced for 2023. A beta version will be available starting August 23 for those who sign up for the official website. According to the development studio, the title is planned to last with a season system that rolls out post-launch content that is promised important to us.
