High Performance Director Romain Barras talks about the decisions made by the selection committee for the European Championships in Munich (Germany), which will take place from August 15 to 21.

A new cycle from Munich

Having made the decision to bring a tight selection to the world championships in Eugene, we wanted to start a new cycle from the European championships in Munich, with a much larger selection that includes 101 athletes. This is a record for the French team in the history of this competition, since the largest group dates back to Budapest 1998, with 97 selected. This competition will serve as the basis for the World Cups in Budapest in 2023, then the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.

The top 24 indicator

We wanted to open up the selection to all eligible athletes based on the European Athletics criteria, as long as they have the ability to be in the top 24 of their event. We do this based on the level of racing in the European top 24 from the summer 2022 report, taking into account the expected forces in attendance for D-Day. We therefore exclude representatives of nations that are not authorized to participate. to the competition, as well as athletes whose absence or withdrawal was already known. In competitions, where only 26 athletes are entered per event, we simply rely on the list of eligible athletes submitted by European Athletics. Please note that French Elite 2022 Outdoor Champions were automatically eligible, regardless of their place in the continental balance, from the time they were eligible for European Athletics.

Manga instead of Belocian over 110 m hurdles

We had to make a difficult decision in the 110m hurdles. In addition to Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, invited as current European champion, and Sasha Zhoya and Just Kwaou-Mathey, priorities after their participation in the Eugene Worlds, there was a fourth ticket to be awarded to Wilhem Belocian or Aurel Manga, who were resigning Wilhem he ran 13”23 on April 30 at Jacksonville and Aurel in 13”29 on July 4 at Sotteville. Wilhem, injured in the hamstring, was not in the French championship, a competition in which Aurel took second place. Wilhem is still in the rehabilitation phase. According to our medical team, he was fit to run in Munich. But being able to perform at the level we expect is something completely different. Therefore, we have made the decision to select Aurel based on the form he has shown over the last few weeks. We also wanted to protect Wilhem, both physically and mentally. We are counting heavily on him for next year, then for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Juniors World Priority for Konaté

We have selected Jules Pommery, Tom Campagne and Augustin Bey at length. Erwan Konaté was also eligible, based on his performance last year. But we rely on the balance of 2022 to make our decision. The international deadline to achieve performance ends on July 26, so their result in the final of the U20 World Cup could not be taken into account. The fact that the return of the world championships from Cali is scheduled for August 9, with jet lag to deal with and a departure to Munich three days later. It seemed to us a risky sequence for an athlete who is still evolving in the junior category, when at the time of the selection committee three jumpers were ahead of him in the balance of the year.

The other arbitrations

Over 800m, we had to decide between Yanis Meziane and Hugo Houyez, who are credited with the same performance in the balance of 2022: 1’45”52. We have taken into account the direct clashes between these two athletes, specifically during the French championship in Caen, where the first of those mentioned beat the second in the final. In the 3000m steeplechase, where there were many eligible athletes, we rely on the results of the summer, in order Mehdi Belhadj, Louis Gilavert and Djilali Bedrani, these three athletes also took the top three places during the French championships.

Two athletes in the men’s 400m

Gilles Biron (minimum European Athletics) and Thomas Jordier (champion of France and eligible for the ranking) were selected individually. Loïc Prévot was also eligible for the 400m but did not participate in the French championships over this distance, preferring to line up only for the 200m. However, it was clearly stated in our selection procedures that an athlete claiming selection had to participate in the national meet in the discipline in which he was seeking a place, and this had been reminded of those involved by our specialty managers. We regret the choice of Loïc and his coach during the French championships, but the selection methods were known to all and must be respected to preserve fairness.

the absent

Hassan Chahdi had long ago decided to prefer the world championships to Europe in Munich, and is recovering from his marathon in Eugene. On the injured side, Morhad Amdouni (10,000m) is unfortunately not sufficiently recovered from a left foot injury. The same goes for Rouguy Diallo (triple jump), who was injured during the French championship. Lolassonn Djouhan (discus) was recently injured during a bench press session, and was also forced to retire, as was Fabrisio Saidy (4x400m), victim of a grade 3 hamstring tear on the sidelines of the Eugene World’s.
