Here is everything you need to know before diving into this season that promises to be so special, especially from a regulatory point of view.

four descents

This is undoubtedly the greatest originality of this season. In order to register a transition to 18 clubs, Ligue 1 will experience four relegations at the end of this 2022-2023 financial year. The 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th places in the table will be relegated directly to the lower category, with no possibility of being drafted in the play-offs, while only the top two in Ligue 2 will be promoted. What to expect fierce clashes between the less good students, who will have to fight to the end to maintain their place in the elite at the end of this season of all dangers.

european places

Regarding the fight for a qualification in the European Cup, there will be no changes this season. As in previous years, the first two in the standings will qualify directly for the Champions League and the third will have to go through a third preliminary round and then a playoff to validate their C1 ticket, like AS Monaco this year. Fourth place is direct qualification for the group stage of the Europa League and fifth place for the play-offs for access to the group stage of the Europa Conference League. However, the cards will be redistributed for the following exercise: at the end of the 2023-2024 season, the third in Ligue 1 will qualify directly for the Champions League if France remains the fifth European nation in the UEFA ranking at end of the 2022-2023 season.

a suitable schedule

An extended championship and a crazy schedule. The World Cup in Qatar in the middle of the season obliges, Ligue 1 had to adapt to stall the 38 days despite a break of a month and a half to let the best nations on the planet compete in the Persian Gulf. Ligue 1 will be played exceptionally for ten months, until June 3, with a truce to let the internationals out from matchday 15, the weekend of November 11-13. After the World Cup, Ligue 1 will resume in the middle of the week, on December 27 and 28, with, in particular, PSG-Strasbourg and OM-Toulouse for a French Boxing Day, just ten days after the final. of the World Cup.

VAR, changes, numbers…

Little change in the rules of the elite this season. The only new rule, quite symbolic: the possibility for players to wear a number from 1 to 99, when the limit was previously set at 30. Some have already officially taken advantage of this new regulation to wear a new number, such as Mamadou Sakho. (75) or Wahbi Khazri (99). It should also be noted that Ligue 1 players will be playing with a new ball this season, as the championship has entered into a new partnership with Kipsta, which replaces equipment manufacturer Uhlsport.

Naturally, for this season the video assistance to the referee is renewed, the possibility of making five changes per game and having an additional substitute in case of concussion.
