7 seater SUV
simple hybrid
From €43,990

The new generation of Sorento, the fourth, appeared on our roads in 2021 with a single engine. A 265 hp plug-in hybrid block. The 7-seater SUV is now bolstered by a non-rechargeable hybrid engine that should revive the interest of families.

The first reason is economic, since with this engine the sale price goes from €51,490 to €43,990 for the same finish (Motion). In exchange, you will have to do without 4-wheel drive, accept a lower power level (230 hp) and pay two small penalties. The first on CO2 emissions. The highest amount, like our test version in high-end “Premium” finish in 7 seats, is €1,276 (153 g of CO2). The second sanction refers to the one whose weight reaches €580 (1,858 kg), at a rate of €10 per kilo from 1,800 kg. Government taxes included, the case remains valid for the customer.

The Sorento is a 4.81 m long family SUV.
This simple hybrid version is visually identical to the plug-in hybrid. The price, on the other hand, is more accessible at €7,500 for an identical finish. (excluding penalties)

Downsizing a vehicle of this size can lead us to fear the worst in terms of road performance. They’re not here. The supercharged 4-cylinder petrol engine is the same as the plug-in hybrid. It is a 1.6 180 hp. On the contrary, it is associated with a less powerful electric motor, here 60 hp, powered by a smaller battery (1.49 kWh) placed on the ground below the driver. It is, except for a few details, the same principle that Toyota has used for 20 years.

In the city, this hybridization allows starting with the vigor and silence of electric power in a short distance (about 2 km) optimizing fuel consumption. After 30 km/h or when the torque requirement is high, the internal combustion engine takes over to ensure. This battery is recharged through the internal combustion engine and during braking phases. The average consumption is logically higher compared to the rechargeable hybrid (charged batteries), however, the customer will find his way.

With a 67 liter tank, this simple hybrid version offers greater autonomy.

We noticed an average of 7.5 l/100 km in mixed use, which is correct considering the enormous size that has to be moved. On the road, driving at the limit, consumption reaches 8 l/100 km. Note that we achieved this score with 4 people on board. With 7 passengers, logically the consumption will be higher. Another important difference is the capacity of the tank. This gains 20 liters compared to the rechargeable hybrid due to the disappearance of the “large” batteries. Now, with 67 liters available, the Sorento can go further and longer.

The advertised 230 are pretty much all there, don’t expect lightning accelerations or spirited revivals but rather a reserve of power largely sufficient to overtake and pick up low because the Sorento has to deal with a lot of mass and a medium level of torque (350 Nm ). The SUV actually behaves as it is presented: like a good father’s vehicle that pours in flexibility and comfort. And in terms of comfort, the Korean SUV has nothing to envy to its rare competitors Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe and Ford Explorer.

The cabin is careful, functional and provides technological content. It has nothing to envy to premium brands.

The Sorento was designed primarily for the US market and its vast expanses. The road is logically his favorite space. The soft cushioning, the light steering and the careful soundproofing invite you to swallow the kilometers, with the rear well fitted in height in a seat as wide as an armchair. In return, this enormous size (length of 4.81 m and width of 1.90 m) requires driving with great caution in the city and in parking lots. In this sense, the 360° camera is a valuable asset during manoeuvres.

The space and comfort offered to passengers are of a very high standard.

Available in five or seven seats for an additional €950, the Sorento is designed for the family because not only the driver is delighted by a functional and technological cabin, but also its passengers. The rear seat slides out leaving a gigantic amount of legroom, the seatbacks tilt and power fold 60/40. Better, high finishes add a single cup holder, heated seats, a SUB port and a sunshade. In the 5-seater configuration, the boot volume is close to that of a utility vehicle generating 898 litres, it’s huge! The 7-seater version, available as a pack, offers two folding seats that, despite being a somewhat short seat, allow you to travel in good conditions, as long as you do not exceed 1.70 m. Third-row passengers will also benefit from personal air conditioning and USB connectivity.

In 5-seater configuration, the cubic trunk has a total of 898 liters, simply huge.

Sold for €56,940 without penalty, this high-end “Premium” finish offers a level of refinement close to that of the premium competition. The ultra-equipped car is ultimately €10,000 cheaper than premium competition like BMW with the X5 or Mercedes with the GLE. Here, the leathers and plastics used are of good quality, as is the technological content. The 10.25-inch touchscreen in landscape position is perhaps a bit small. However, its resolution is good and the operating system is efficient. It has Android and Carplay connectivity. Only the Bose audio system disappoints with its power and shallow bass.
