Reduced to its simplest expression at the beginning of the year due to shortages, the Volkswagen ID.3 range is once again expanded from the top. Should we prefer it to the more expensive Renault Mégane?
Life is hard for the Volkswagen ID.3. Beset by the shortage of semiconductors, the German manufacturer has decided to reduce the autonomy of its compact zero emissions to a minimum. Objective: Limit the number of configurations to facilitate production and ensure that the model is delivered within acceptable timeframes. In fact, since February, it was only available with its unique 204 hp (150 kW) engine, the 58 kWh intermediate battery and a unique finish called Active richly equipped and displayed at a correct price without a plus: €44,990, without bonus of €6,000. It was, let’s get along, because the range is expanding again. In fact, the Pro S Active model enriches the small ID.3 family. Direct competitor of the most luxurious version of the new Renault Mégane E-Tech 100% Electric, does your Diamond rival have anything to worry about on paper?
Power or autonomy, the choice is yours
Despite its premium status, expect no more power from this ID.3 Pro S Active than the Pro Performance Active run. For lovers of power, we will have to wait for the ID.3 GTX that should be around 300 hp. However, the electric motor, placed at the rear, puts out a pretty decent output of 204 hp. What to see coming and it is enough to perform the exercise from 0 to 100 km/h in just under 8 s. With its additional 16 hp, the more expensive Mégane does somewhat better in this exercise: 7.4 s. But this is one of the only arguments of the French. Because, not much cheaper (€750 less, neither of them can certainly claim the €6,000 super bonus and actually settle for €2,000), its small battery of only 60 kWh makes it immediately less attractive than the 77 kWh of the one German. According to the manufacturers’ figures, its combined cycle autonomy would be 100 km less on average, or even a little more depending on the version and equipment you select. And since the DC fast charging power is roughly equivalent (5 kW difference, to the benefit of the ID.3), it is not at this point that we can decide between them. Like what, Volkswagen doesn’t necessarily rhyme with high prices.
However, a quick look at the equipment shows that the advantage is French, but only a little: 20 “vs 19” wheels for the ID.3, leather upholstery against mixed velvet-synthetic leather, massage function for the front seats . Not necessarily enough to tip the scales in your favor. Afterwards, it’s a matter of taste: some will prefer the Mégane’s SUV look to the minivan look, which goes a bit against the VW trend but guarantees better space on board. It is not certain that this new version will help to recover the ID.3, whose sales have fallen by 44% in Europe since the beginning of the year, and even more than half (-59.8%, 1,007 copies) in our territory. To give an idea, a sedan like the Citroën C5 X or a large SUV like the Mercedes GLE sold more in the same period: 1,102 the first, 1,098 the second.
