Essai - RAM 1500 TRX (2022) : Raptorovore

The Ford F-150 is a bit to the American market what the Renault Clio is to the French market or the Golf to the German market. Not in terms of size, of course, but in terms of commercial success. In fact, for almost half a century the big pick-up (at least according to our standards) has been the undisputed leader in its national market. A model that wins trophies year after year, and that also pays for the audacity of showing off in muscular Raptor versions, or even Shelby. It was too much for the men of RAM -whose model 1500 is the eternal second in the market-, which is why they decided to respond scathingly with the TRX. The model name alone is enough to illustrate the new model’s designated goal: its sound evokes that of T-Rex, the Anglo-Saxon nickname for Tyrannosaurus. Direct reference to the Raptor, another species of dinosaur made famous by the cult saga Jurassic Park. And if you’ve seen the first movie, you know who wins at the end…

A T-Rex eating a Raptor. Enjoy the wink!

Plus, if that wasn’t obvious enough, the brand has even hidden a fun little detail under the hood, a gag Americans love: opening the airbox lid reveals a t-rex devouring. .a raptor ! Is it clear enough now!?

XXL construction

If a classic RAM 1500 is no longer of the discreet type in our regions, this TRX is decidedly overkill. The width increases 15 cm thanks to the widened wings and tracks, while the height increases 12 cm thanks to the new suspensions and 35-inch wheels (!), which make the machine culminate at 2.09 meters. Combine all this with a total length of 5.94 meters (+2 cm) and you will understand that this TRX needs large spaces to express itself freely. So forget the urban centers, where you risk feeling like an elephant in a china shop, not to mention the real challenge of finding a parking space.

In addition to the imposing dimensions, there is the deliberately aggressive styling. All details and inserts in particular are completely black. Unfortunately they merge with the color of the bodywork, also black, of our test vehicle, but beware that whatever color is chosen, the shields, the hood inserts, the rims, the rear-view mirrors, the pseudo-air caps in fenders and lettering will remain matte black. It is the front that best translates the musculature of the model, with this exclusive domed bonnet equipped with a large additional air intake.

The latter also hides three small LEDs that, combined with the light reminders at the rear of the cabin, make this TRX perfectly identifiable even in the middle of the night. At the rear, the dumpster is wide, but the big lizard’s 2,880kg empty limits payload to 620kg, this to stay under the 3.5-tonne bar. That’s not much for a truck, especially this size.

luxury gross

With this rugged-looking exterior, one might expect a cabin that doesn’t cut corners. However, this would be a little too quick to forget the American origins of the machine, and the taste for opulence of buyers from Uncle Sam’s country. Thus, the cabin is surprisingly luxurious. Already, the steps automatically pop out of their housing as soon as you activate a door handle, for easy boarding (or descent). Equipment far from superfluous, because the ground clearance reaches 30 centimeters!

To the touch, the plastics seem solid, their assemblies are precise and regular and the upholstery, like all the furniture and the shutters, are covered in leather.

Many TRX logos also recall the exclusivity of the model, on the backs of the front seats, behind the steering wheel facing the driver, or on the center armrest, where an aluminum plate shows some technical details such as the chassis number, engine and the compressor. Granted, you don’t get the near-perfect fit of a premium car, and the leather isn’t as refined. But we are still well beyond what we normally find on board a van in our regions. Clearly this RAM (like the other RAMs) is a cut above Asian and European productions when it comes to passenger accommodation.

The presentation is modern and very technological. You don't feel like you're in a van.

This is also noticeable in the equipment offered, whether standard or optional. In the center is a large, vertically positioned 12-inch touchscreen display, replacing the traditional center console. This obviously makes it possible to control all the functions and parameters of the vehicle, and controls a UConnect 4 multimedia system, compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in particular. Behind the wheel, the driver is also entitled to a 7” screen positioned between the dials, giving access to all driving information and some performance displays specific to this TRX.

Rear passengers will have the impression of being on board a limousine as there is plenty of legroom.

And above all, the habitability is quite incredible! Given the width of the vehicle, front passengers obviously won’t be embarrassed by elbows. In the rear, three adults will be able to sit comfortably on the bench, where they will also benefit from limousine-worthy knee clearance. Storage space is vast and ubiquitous and in the large central cabinet is another humorous nod to which the Americans have the secret: a fresco depicts the size of this TRX compared to a human, a tyrannosaurus and a… velociraptor.

The TRX is straight out of prehistory. The proof.
