WhatsApp on Windows is getting a bit of a makeover. A new app, just released on the Microsoft Store, lets you reply to messages from your computer even if your phone is turned off.
WhatsApp wants you to be available all the time, no matter what device you’re using. As the site points out the edge, the messaging app (owned by the Meta group) received a total makeover on Windows. The new app, recently released on the Microsoft Store, not only offers a leap forward in terms of performance and responsiveness, but also allows you to reply to your messages even when your phone is turned off.
A truly independent WhatsApp messenger
Until then, the only Windows application available was a simple copy and paste of the web interface in a separate window. It certainly allowed receiving and writing messages, but the experience wasn’t great. Fortunately, a native Windows app has just been released (and a Mac version is coming soon) to overcome these issues.
As WhatsApp indicates on its help page, the advantages of this native app are numerous. First of all, you benefit from a “higher reliability and speed”She is “optimized for your computer’s operating system” and even allows “receive notifications and messages when your phone is offline”. It is undoubtedly this latest novelty that will be talked about the most.

WhatsApp messaging has long been limited to use on smartphones. The SIM card and the phone number linked to it acted as an identifier to access your account. As a result, the applications on the web, on the computer or on the tablet were, in fact, just a mirror of the smartphone application. But the service has long tried to go beyond this model to offer an experience similar to Facebook Messenger, that is, available everywhere in the same way, with or without a phone at hand.
Some limitations remain
Let’s be clear: you always need to have a smartphone and a SIM card to create a WhatsApp account, but once the application in Windows is linked to your account, the phone does not need to be connected to the Internet or even turned on. to transmit received messages. These are stored on a server and distributed to all apps connected to the same account. It is this revised and corrected network architecture that will also soon allow the service to be available on multiple smartphones at the same time.
The app will also integrate better with the Windows ecosystem now that it’s no longer just a window to the WhatsApp website. There are still some limitations in the new software. It’s not capable of creating link previews in messages, showing the live location of contacts who share this information with you, or deleting chats if your primary device is an iPhone. Beyond that, the Windows app works as a completely standalone app. Frustrated Mac users can apply to join the beta program, which also offers a native macOS app.

WhatsApp is a free and secure instant messenger that allows you to stay in touch with all your friends or family, you can download and install it on all platforms.
