A (very) good smartphone for less than 500 euros? Some manufacturers didn’t wait for the start of the school year to launch some exciting new products in the middle of summer. Motorola and its edge 30, Nothing and its Phone (1), or even Google and its Pixel 6a try to seduce with a balanced and efficient technical offer that “20 Minutes” deciphers to help you make the best choice.
Motorola edge 30, the almost perfect balance
Motorola revisits its range of smartphones with much more consistency and that’s good! This edge 30 is part of the mid/premium range offer from the American manufacturer (owned by Lenovo) and takes advantage of a balanced technical sheet. Under Android 12, it’s powered by the Snapdragon 778G+ processor (the same as the Nothing Phone One), allowing it to be fast for most uses.
Without too many compromises in the photo (although it loses the 3x optical zoom of its predecessor, the edge 20, in favor of a perfectible 10x digital zoom), it is certainly a skeleton key. Billed as the world’s thinnest 5G smartphone (at 6.8mm thick, for just 155 grams), it does however suffer from a somewhat light battery life compared to its rivals. €499 (8GB/128GB).
Screen: 6.7” AMOLED (2400 x 1080 pixels) 60Hz or 144 Hz depending on the content.
Photo: 50-megapixel (f/1.8) + 50-megapixel (f/2.2) + 2-megapixel (f/2.4) depth-of-field sensor on the back. 32 megapixels on the front.
Video: up to 4K at 30fps.
Battery: 4020mAh Compatible with 33 W (block supplied). Does not support wireless charging.
Google Pixel 6a, the photo as the largest!
The Mountain View firm delivers with this entry-level version of the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6 a smartphone whose technical characteristics seem to be hot and cold.
While the Pixel 6a’s display only offers a 60Hz refresh rate (as in entry-level smartphones), the handset is IP67 standard (a feature reserved for high-end!). Although it is positioned in photographic quality, its memory does not exceed 128 GB…
Despite this sort of big gap or inconsistency, it’s still a well-balanced camera that will primarily appeal to photography enthusiasts. Although these two rear sensors only offer 12 megapixels, Google knows how to sublimate them by force of algorithms and artificial intelligence. Behind the scenes, the manufacturer’s super-powerful Tensor chip is at work and it shows. Of course, the atypical-looking device with its imposing rear sensor bar can confuse (or please, directly!), but this smartphone manages to distinguish itself and offer, without too many technical compromises, an excellent device with undisputed performance / price. . . €459 (6GB/128GB).
Screen: 6.1-inch OLED (2400 x 1080 pixels) 60 Hz.

Battery: 4410mAh Compatible with 18 W (block not included). Does not support wireless charging.
Nothing Phone (1), the slightly green hype
“We wanted to have fun as users, bring back a spirit of enthusiasm towards technological products,” one of the founders of Nothing recently explained to “20 Minutes.” You have won, with your phone (1), the company signs a unique and unconventional smartphone, hype ! Behind a design that can be divisive, with a transparent glass back cover, the Android terminal reveals an original interface.
Called Glyph, it allows you to be warned by a flashing LED system on the back, phone calls, messages… Even better, these LEDs also serve as a flash, with a much more natural effect on the skin. light.
Offering a very correct performance, especially in photos, with only two rear sensors (like what, it’s possible!), the Nothing Phone (1) is a good mid-range Android smartphone, fast and fluid. It also tries to claim some sustainable ambitions: “We have reached 50% recycled plastics. But it was difficult to find the right suppliers. There is still room for improvement. We hope that we will be able to generate a change”, we assure in Nothing. €469 (12GB/128GB).
