Eighth day of competition in Munich during the European Championship and two new medals are added to the bag of the French clan (41 in total), on Friday, August 19. Eddie Potdevin was the first to hit, in bronze, in the Munich water before Wilfried Happio went on to win silver on the track.

In mountain biking, Victor Koretzky did not go far from the podium but failed in fourth place. As for table tennis, disappointments in singles for the Lebrun brothers and for Jianan Yuan, eliminated shortly before the semi-finals.

Athletics: Wilfried Happio in silver in the 400m hurdles

Wilfried Happio surpassed himself by winning the silver medal in the 400m hurdles in 48″56. Arriving 4th at the World Championships in Eugene (United States) in July, the Frenchman finally gets on the podium and thus confirms his beautiful progress in the last weeks.


In Munich he crossed the finish line just behind the Olympic champion in the distance, the Norwegian Karsten Warholm and world record holder (45’94). The latter, who had finished 7th in the World Championship after his injury in June, knocked down the European championship record in 47″12. Ludvy Vaillant (48″79) remains off the podium by one hundredth, just behind the Turkish Yasmani Copello (48″79).

In the 3,000 meter hurdles, the two Frenchmen involved, Djilali Bedrani (8th) and Louis Gilavert (15th) were unable to do anything against the Finn Topi Raitanen who won ahead of the Italians Ahmed Abdelwahed and Osama Zoghlami.

Among the women, Shana Grebo defended her chances in the 200m final, for her first international final. But the Frenchwoman finished in sixth position (23’06), far behind the European champion Mujinga Kambundji (22’32).

After failing in her quest for the gold medal by 5 thousandths in the 100m final, Switzerland's Mujinga Kambundji gets her revenge and wins the 200m!  With a time of 22:32, she is ahead of Britain's Dina Asher-Smith and Denmark's Ida Karstoft.  The French Shana Grebo finished in sixth position.

For canoeing: Eddie Potdevin wins bronze

France’s first medal in these online skydiving European Championships. Like three years ago, Eddie Potdevin savored this Friday a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash in the Va’a (Polynesian canoe) VL3 category. Sixth at the Tokyo Games, the 42-year-old ceist was beaten by Britain’s Jack Eyers and Ukraine’s Vladyslav Yepifanov. The other French involved in this final, Adel Aber, finished in sixth position.

“This medal has a special flavor, they deprived me of the World Cup in Canada and I had it in my throat” he explained into the microphone of France Télévisions. “I didn’t come for revenge, but I wanted to show that I was back. This is just one step towards Paris 2024, I hope that my colleagues will continue this momentum.”

Frenchman Eddie Potdevin, 42, won the bronze medal in the 200 meter canoe for the disabled.  The tricolor was preceded by the British Jack Eyers and the Ukrainian Vladyslav Yepifanov.  The other blue in the race, Abel Aber, finished sixth in the final.

MTB: Tom Pidcock untouchable, Victor Koretzky at the foot of the podium

Tom Pidcock got off to a good start with his insane ambition to score a hat-trick in 2022. Starting just after the halfway mark of the mountain bike event, the Briton won his first European title in the discipline. The 23-year-old runner will aim for the same metal on August 26 during the World Championship of the discipline in the town of Les Gets, in France. Who also took a stage victory in the last Tour de France will also be aiming for gold in September at Road Worlds in Australia on September 25.

In the fight for the podium, Frenchman Victor Koretzky finally finished in fourth position, failing to catch up with Sebastian Carstensen (2nd) and Filippo Colombo (3rd) when these two competitors were a few meters ahead. As for the other Habs involved, Joshua Dubau and Stéphane Tempier finished 14th and 15th. Thomas Griot was forced to withdraw.

After starting the race a little behind, the Briton did not hesitate and prevailed with a 10-second advantage over the Dane Sebastian Fini Carstensen and the Swiss Filippo Colombo.  The first Frenchman, Victor Koretzky, is 4th.

Table tennis: Lebrun brothers and Jianan Yuan eliminated in singles

In bronze in doubles for his first international competition, Alexis Lebrun, 18, and his brother Felix, 15, were eliminated prematurely in singles. The youngest suffered the law of the Swedish Kristian Karlsson in the round of 16 (1-4) while the eldest stopped a lap later, in the 8th, before the executioner of his brother (2-4).

In the women’s draw, Jianan Yuan narrowly missed out on her ticket to the semifinals. She is a gold medalist along with Emmanuel Lebesson in mixed doubles, she lost on Friday against Germany’s Nina Mittelham (3-4). Frustrating, especially as the French were leading three sets to two, 9 points to 6…

The Frenchwoman was winning 3 sets to 2, 9 points to 6, but finally gave in to Germany's Nina Mittelham in the 7th set and failed just before the semis.  There are no French involved in table tennis anymore.
