game news The creator of the Yakuza games wants his next hit to be more “violent” and “silly” and will imitate this famous director
Eager to remain a video game developer first and foremost, the illustrious Toshihiro Nagoshi made the difficult decision to leave SEGA earlier this year to pursue an exciting new venture under the banner of Chinese company NetEase Games. With his new studio, the developer wants to impress and wants to be inspired by one of the best film directors in the world to make Nagoshi Studio’s first title a real success.

Nagoshi, developer at heart, not CEO!
After more than thirty years of good and loyal service within Nintendo’s rival company, Toshihiro Nagoshi felt that it was time for a new journey to begin.. During his years at SEGA, Nagoshi had risen high enough to apply for a position within the company’s management. However, as he explains today to the editorial office of 4 playersthat was not what interested him. Sensing that SEGA was preparing the ground for its induction, the developer preferred to pack up and focus on what it loves most: developing games.
(…) In recent years, I had reached the highest level of Sega management (…) I told the current owner: “Guys, I don’t want to be the CEO of Sega”. I am a gamer and game creator, I also want to direct my career in that direction. (…) I ended up realizing that the prospects were better if I set up my own company and didn’t stay at Sega. And at the same time, Sega can now train someone to be the future CEO.
As he himself says, this decision was favorable to both parties and in no way harmed his relationship with the Japanese publisher. Now totally focused on what he wants to develop, Toshihiro Nagoshi is working behind the scenes on his next hit, a title we still don’t know much about. However, the latter revealed, during his interview with 4 playersthe influences he had for the setting of his studio’s first game, and there’s a director who gives him lots of ideas!
First clues before the real revelations
Genuinely passionate, it’s hard for Nagoshi not to divulge more about his next hit which, however, should retain what makes the salt of the Yakuza license: namely drama, violence and humor.. In addition, for PlayStation players who wish to discover the universe of the license, it is possible to retrieve it “for free”, and before September 6, Yakuza: like a dragon thanks, at least, to the subscription to PlayStation Plus Essential.
Once again, I have to be vague. But it is like this: if I have an idea and I want to realize it, then it quickly comes out of me. (…) I’m not the type that can hold such a thing for a long time. So you probably won’t have to wait long… Or rather: I think I’ll release it much sooner than other developers would. Of course, I can’t say much about our game yet, but I can give a rough idea: It will definitely contain violence as a gameplay element, but I don’t want to go too much in the direction of suspense or even horror.
Chatty without saying too much, Nagoshi tells us that we might get some information about his next game sooner than we think. He goes beyond these comments by adding that he would like to take inspiration from Quentin Tarantino movies for this new title.. There will be violence, of course, but counterbalanced by aspects of the director’s films: humor, madness, seriousness but also, and above all, a touch of humanity. This is precisely what you’re trying to infuse into your project right now – we can’t wait to find out the result!
