What is The Last of Us Part I?
The Last of Us Part I is a remake of Naughty Dog’s 2013 game The Last of Us. Announced during the Summer Game Fest launch party, the title is thus the fourth version of the game (after the Game of the Year version and the 2014 remaster). Like its two predecessors, The Last of Us Part I will include the base game and the Left Behind DLC, But that is not all. We said it, the title is a remake and who says remake, says graphic and technical review. The goal, according to the developers, is offer players the final version of the game, “not different but extremely better”.
What are the graphic improvements that this remake brings?
But then, what are these improvements? Well, they are mostly graphic. This jumps out at you when you look at the different PS4/PS5 comparisons revealed by Naughty Dog. More complete decorations, reworked proportions, new colorimetry, more advanced light management, improved 3D models… The Last of Us has never looked better than The Last of Us Part I, approaching the detailed graphics and immersion of The Last of Us Part II. The latter will be even more important as the transitions between game phases and cutscenes will be seamless. Please note that The Last of Us Part I will feature two different graphics modes: a native 4K mode / 30 frames per second and a dynamic 4K mode and 60 fps.
A lot of effort has also been put into character animations. A comparison focused on the character of Tess had allowed to show all the work done in this plan. Finer and more realistic lines, more believable and detailed facial animations… The goal is to take advantage of modern technical capabilities to get closer to the initial performances of the actors and, therefore, to the “original vision” of the project.
What improvements in gameplay does this remake bring?
To make a new version, you don’t just need a prettier game, you need a redesigned game. The Last of Us Part I is also expected at this point, players are hoping to find a modernized game. Therefore, they will be happy to know that PS3/PS4 game aging AI has been reworked with a new engine qualified for “more sophisticated” by developers. To make combat phases more interesting and energized, we can have enemies communicate and bypass you instead of stupidly rushing in or going around in circles.
NPCs will also move more believably and can anticipate danger to hide accordingly. Work has also been done on the physics of surrounding objects and exploration phases. The goal is to offer the player more impactful gameplay and more immersive gaming sensations than ever before. On the other hand, a priori it is not possible to dodge or lie face down. like in The Last of Us Part II.
What accessibility options for The Last of Us Part I?
On the accessibility side, Naughty Dog was also inspired by the work done with The Last of Us Part II, which had been applauded at this point. The studio has even decided to go further by offering even more accessibility options than in the latter. We are told, in fact, of more than sixty, including the full audio description of the scenes. “Every option (like this, editor’s note) that we add is a barrier that is removed for someone” Matthew Gallant, game director at the game, said proudly.
New modes, new outfits… Will The Last of Us Part I offer any other new features?
In addition to these improvements, The Last of Us Part I will include a series of new features, starting with two new modes that will delight the most hardcore gamers: a permadeath mode and a speedrun mode. A Preview Photo mode similar to The Last of Us Part II will also be offered. you will also find original filters as well as new outfits.
The Last of Us Part I, a real PS5 game?
The Last of Us Part I is a timed PS5 exclusive. So we’re hoping to see it exploit certain capabilities of Sony’s latest console. The power of the machine made possible most of the improvements we mentioned above, but not only. The game will take advantage of DualSense and its features. Haptic feedback, for example, will allow for an immersive experience both in combat and during exploration phases (a slight vibration when a hero touches something, for example). As for the adaptive triggers, they will offer different resistance depending on the type of weapon used. The developers also cited 3D audio that will allow you to locate an enemy based on the noises it produces.
Why is The Last of Us Part I making some players angry?
Many players have pointed fingers at this remake, which they consider too expensive. Parris Lilly, host of the Gamertag Radio podcast, let her anger out a while ago: “The problem is not that (Naughty Dog and PlayStation, editor’s note) are recreating the game. The problem is that they are asking for $70 in return.”. Buying a game at a high price when it’s less than ten years old and has already been entitled to a remaster has a way of bugging some.
Especially since some gameplay mechanics present in The Last of Us Part II don’t seem to have been added to this new version. At least that’s what various leaks of the game have shown, enough to feed a little more discontent from some players who would have liked to find more modern gameplay. However, these criticisms are made even before we have been able to test the game, it remains to be seen what it will actually be once The Last of Us Part I is released.
The last of us part 1 gameplay leak…
This is worse than I thought, in terms of graphics and gameplay, it looks like a remaster, not a new version. I never thought I’d skip this, but I actually could. pic.twitter.com/7k8w4AKEyS
