The 6th barometer of car repair prices, prepared by the price comparator “idGarages.com”, indicates that prices have increased between 5 and 16% depending on the type of part. And tires are no exception. The mechanics pass, with the difficulties that this entails for motorists. A particularly noticeable price increase in Occitanie.
Very expensive car! The passion of the French for their aerodynamic lines has lost ground since the infernal mechanics of inflation kicked in at the beginning of 2022. The price rise forces the French to delay their purchase project. In January, 109,245 vehicles over 15 years old were sold against 102,000 new vehicles, for the first time. So much so that the average age of the car fleet then exceeds 11 years, when in 2018 it was 9 years old.
Problem, it is also difficult for motorists who have made the choice of the occasion if we refer to the latest idGarages.com barometer that analyzes every year 30 million estimates made by its 4,300 associated workshops. The shortage, the rise in the price of raw materials that impacts the price of parts, the increase in labor… the factors that explain the rise in prices are multiple.
And the result is there. In the second quarter of 2022, brake parts increased by almost 9%, clutches by 5%…
Despite an above-average increase, Occitania in the least expensive regions
Small consolation, Occitanie mechanics are among the cheapest in France despite a price increase above the national average. They charge €538, or +6.53% for a timing kit, €803 or +7.93% for a clutch kit.
But in Occitania, as in other places, there is still time for questions for those who do not have the possibility of teleworking or sharing a car.
What is the best strategy in the current economic situation: buy a recent vehicle or extend the useful life of an existing one? “Maintain what already exists, if we have maintained it well and if we take care of it. Not if we take time to make the reviews”, replies Fabien Borsa, director of marketing for the online price comparison site idGarages.com. Hence the interest in demanding maintenance invoices when looking for a used car.
But not everything is so black in the current circumstances. Pads offered for the purchase of a set of brake rotors, use of private label parts, discounted labor time…mechanics are doing more to keep customers.
“Comparing the prices of 40 different services, we see a 5% more discount this year. Sales statistics are so catastrophic that professionals are making efforts, highlights Fabien Borsa. There is a real risk that motorists will leave workshops with prices that are too high. They say to themselves, I’ll do the repair later, or nothing. This would be a dangerous choice for vehicle safety. »
Garage owners are aware of this, which explains an increase in general overhaul limited to 3.5% (2.94% in Occitania) despite high oil inflation (+16%).
But beware of the other side of the coin for those who keep their vehicle too long. “Replacing a particulate filter costs 1,500 euros, usually after 100,000 km,” recalls Gérald Sgobbo, vice president of the National Automobile Federation. If you keep a car for more than 200,000 km, you have to change it twice. »
Elementary for Michel Houellebecq, perhaps. But less and less essential for small budgets. And an unfiltered motorist can get out of control, especially when angry. It’s not very good for the government politically.
Record tire earnings and service returns
Tires increase between 2 and 12% depending on the brand. Tired of harsh comments from dissatisfied customers, a mechanic from Toulouse asks himself. “I don’t mind that there is a problem with the carbon black produced in the Ukraine, but…” “The worst thing about inflation is among the manufacturers. We are not adding to it, ”defends another.
Would Michelin and Co. convey more than the rising cost of raw materials that they themselves are experiencing? Michelin had a turnover of 23.8 billion dollars last year, for a net profit of 1.8 billion and a margin of 12.5%, thus returning to the level it had before the health crisis. Goodyear announces a turnover of more than 38.2% for a profit of 553 million. And 2022 promises to be of the same ilk according to experts.
The State will increase its aid by 30 cents per liter of fuel on September 1. With such gains, couldn’t manufacturers make a move on tires as well?
