In August, French manufacturers are strong in terms of electric car sales. But Tesla is not far behind!
As we saw this morning, in Europe, Tesla has scandalously dominated the electric car market since the beginning of the year, although the American manufacturer has had a more difficult summer than other brands. Put now the sales figures for the French market, compiled by AAA Data, dominated by Renault, Fiat and Dacia, a little different from what we knew last month.
Electric car sales in August
In first place we find the Renault Mégane E-Tech, followed closely by the Fiat 500 and the Dacia Spring which ranks third. Peugeot remains in the race with its e-208, followed by the Renault Twingo E-Tech in 5th place. It is closely followed by the Tesla Model Y, which surpasses the Peugeot e-2008. In the last three places we find the Hyundai Kona Electric, the Renault Zoé and the Kia Niro EV.
|Car||Sales (July 2022)|
|Renault Megane E-Tech||1,521|
|Renault Twingo ES||714|
|Tesla Model Y||702|
|Hyundai Kona Electric||465|
|kia niro electric||398|
Focus on the Megane E-Tech
Remember that the Renault Megane E-Tech is assembled in France and its engine is now also produced in France, without using rare earths. The battery is from LG and is made in Poland. The French manufacturer plans to repatriate battery cell production to Douai from 2024. Let us take this opportunity to remind you that the Mégane E-Tech is also subject to a remote recall, due toa fault during recharging that can cause the air conditioning system to break.
Where are the Tesla Model 3?
If you are looking for the Tesla Model 3, you have to go check the 14th position in the ranking with 255 units. As a reminder, Teslas deliver erratically, based on ship arrivals from China and the United States. But the new factory in Berlin, which currently only produces Model Y Performance, should be able to solve this problem in the coming months.
This is why, in July, no Model Y was delivered in all of Europe for just 888 Model 3s. The month of September should be more favorable for deliveries from the American manufacturer.
Cumulative figures since January
Let’s now see the accumulated figures, between January and July 2022. The classification is not totally different, but it is the Peugeot e-208 that leads the dance on the podium, followed by the Fiat 500 and the Dacia Spring. Tesla is in better shape here, with the Model 3 in sixth place and the Model Y in eighth place.
Compared to 2021, Tesla delivered 19% fewer cars during the same period. However, the arrival of the Tesla Model Y Propulsion in France, cheaper than the Model 3 Propulsion, should reverse the trend in the coming months.
|Car||Sales (accumulated 2022 to August 31)|
|Renault Twingo E-Tech||9,315|
|tesla model 3||8,063|
|Renault Megane E-Tech||6,257|
|Tesla Model Y||4,713|
|Hyundai Kona Electric||4,232|
electricity is booming
According to figures from AAA Data, electric cars are growing in France, with a 13% market share in August, just behind diesel at 16% and gasoline at 38%. Plug-in hybrids are seeing their share decline with just 7% of the market. Remember that these should no longer benefit from their tax advantages from 2025 in Europe.
The market share of electric cars throughout the year stands at 12.1% according to NGC Data, an increase of 31.6% compared to 2021.
