game news Cyberpunk 2077: Waiting 2 years to play it on PS5 was my best gamer decision
The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on December 10, 2020 was chaotic to say the least… To say the least. With the exception of the PC version, which also suffered from numerous bugs, CD Projekt RED’s RPG failed to deliver on its promises technically to the point of being removed from the PlayStation Store.

Cyberpunk 2077 in a nutshell
Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person role-playing game (RPG) developed by CD Projekt RED and remains to this day one of the most ambitious video game projects of the 21st century. It is mainly about the adaptation on PC and home consoles (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S) of a tabletop role-playing game imagined by Mike Pondsmith and very popular in North America. In fact, when it was released in 1988, the latter democratized a subgenre of science fiction… Cyberpunk… alongside William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer (1984) and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982). That’s all !
We follow the adventures of a citizen born and raised in Night City, a free city located on the border between Northern and Southern California, both member states of the New United States of America (NUSA). Cyberpunk 2077 follows the events narrated in successive editions of the “paper” role-playing game and takes place three decades after the fourth edition titled Cyberpunk Red which takes place in 2045. From a purely gaming point of view, CD Projekt Red’s title is an RPG with rich and intertwined gameplay mechanics, polishing the universe that abounds both for its images and for its multiple cultural inspirations.
2020: A chaotic launch
Unless you’ve lived like a hermit or gone on a pilgrimage for the past two years, you’re aware of the setbacks Cyberpunk 2077 encountered when it launched in December 2021. If the PC version generated some excitement among gamers, as long as hide the many recurring bugs, it was a completely different ball game for the console versions. Barely passable, but playable on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, CD Projekt RED’s title was a shadow of its old 8th-gen machines.. The controversy was so strong that Sony made the decision to withdraw the game from the PlayStation Store for a while, a great first in the history of the online store, and by extension in that of video games.
The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 was a delicate one and the lack of communication from the Polish studios about the console versions before the launch only accentuated the legitimate dissatisfaction of the players. Nevertheless, ten days later, CD Projekt RED announced that it had sold 13 million copies. (including 10.9 million dematerialized) of its futuristic RPG, the latter even being profitable on Day One thanks to pre-orders valued at 8 million units… a true tour de force. By spring 2022, no less than 18 million copies of V’s adventures had found buyers. We briefly mentioned the PC versions, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One and Xbox One X… And the Next Gen in all this?
2022: Everything arrives on time…
… who knows how to wait. Initially promised for 2021, the long-awaited Next Gen update for gamers finally arrives on February 15, 2022, turning debacle into victory (some might say a little too late). To keep it simple, Patch 1.5 is a real boon for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners. Cyberpunk 2077 is almost unrecognizable and is becoming (finally) a title worthy of the new generation of consoles. Beyond the Performance and Ray Tracing modes, which are certainly appreciable, it is the city of Night City that emerges enhanced and becomes before our eyes this dystopia imagined by the author Mike Pondsmith and built by the artists and technicians of CD Projekt Net. !!! Spoiler alert!!! I enjoyed roaming the city and turning V into a Legendary Edgerunner.
This sprawling, multi-cultural city with countless opportunities is now a street theater where thousands/millions of citizens go about their business and survive their lives. What about the large number of bugs that can ruin the gaming experience? Cleaning has been done. The dystopian streets of Night City have never been so “clean” and stylish. So yes, I agree, console players had to wait 14 months to enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 in the best conditions on PS5 and Xbox Series. Personally, I took my problems patiently for another six months, just to make the pleasure last. Don’t we say “the longer the better”? Soon, this simmering RPG set in such a rich cyberpunk universe now lives up to the hopes we’ve had for it since its announcement in 2013. Some like to think of patience as a virtue. Cyberpunk 2077 is proof of that!
