game news Forspoken: Report, Gameplay, Scenario, Developers tell us all about the PS5 exclusive!

At the same time as our “hands-on” preview of Forspoken, members of the Luminous Production studio lent themselves to the interview game, for thirty minutes. The opportunity to learn new information about the ambitious action-adventure game and enjoy some indiscretions. Ready to learn more about Forspoken? Above all, don’t move.

The Forspoken Postponement

For a new franchise, Forspoken didn’t have the most obvious path. Announced during the PlayStation 5 reveal two years ago, Square Enix’s ambitious action-adventure game saw its release date postponed for the first time and then a second time. But this time, it’s sure and true, the heroine Frey and her famous parkour magic will launch the January 24, 2023 on PS5 | computer. To wait, and in parallel with our preview after an hour of gameplay, we were able to chat with Raio Mitsuno, Takefumi Terada, Roosa Jokiaho from Luminous Production, respectively creative producer, co-director and cinematographic artist at Forspoken. To start with, we couldn’t resist asking the team about the latest report on the game, the state of development.

After October 2022, Forspoken is now scheduled for January 2023. Why did they prefer a second postponement when the first one was already being used to adjust Forspoken?

Raio Mitsuno (creative producer):

“As for the second postponement, the most recent, from October to January 2023, the why and how has nothing to do with the development itself, it is we who have reassessed the state of the market and because we are a new license, We wanted to make sure our game is successful by giving it the best opportunity for players to enjoy it. So we talked to stakeholders and decided that it would be in everyone’s interest to push the release date back a few months. These few months, it’s time we didn’t think we had on base, it gave us more time for the polishing phase.”

Takefumi Terada (co-director):

“It is very good that we had this extra time and it is time that we have used well, I think. Overall: It allowed us to continue to improve almost every aspect of the game: the technique (…) the content, we added more things to do, we also tweaked and tweaked the player interface a bit. We have achieved a higher quality in all aspects of the game.”

Roosa Jokiaho (film art):

“Artistically, this new postponement has given us some unexpected polishing time that we don’t usually get at this stage of the project. So it was a nice surprise.”

Would you say that this additional time allowed you to avoid any type of crisis?

Takefumi Terada (co-director):

“I think the extra time was very healthy for the teams as they were able to not only work on the final optimization but also improve things, add new content.”

Raio Mitsuno (creative producer):

“I think one thing that contributes to that is that when the pandemic hit, we had to quickly adapt to a remote work environment. Today, many of us are still working from home. It seems that nous avons passé tant de temps à travailler dans cette configuration et que l’on s’y est habitualué, cela nous permet d’être plus intelligent sur la manière de gérer un environnement sain, de gérer le temps que l’on a Every day. Collectively we have gained more experience working like this (…) So, generally yes, there is a crisis at this point in the development, but for us, it is as if there is no change from one stage of the work to another.

Raio Mitsuno (creative producer):

“Yes, we saw the reactions (…) it is not how I imagined that we would become a meme, but it happened! To be honest, some skits were funny. The challenge (with this type of marketing campaign, editor’s note) is that Forspoken is a very story-driven title, and that aspect is very much there. So when we want to reveal parts of the game, we have to be selective about what dialogue and cutscenes we can use. So when a person sees the trailer or the ad, he doesn’t have all the context, he doesn’t know what’s hidden behind the scenes (…) Although having the context is essential”.

“We are not really worried. We trust our game, we love the story, the narration, the dialogues and I think that as soon as you get the whole picture, everything will make a lot more sense and everything will fit together in the right way.

THE STRUCTURE, THE GAME

And that’s not all ! We take this privileged moment with Luminous Production to learn more about the structure of Forspoken. Because for now (at least before this interview) we don’t really know what to expect. The studio | Square Enix had previously shown the story of the project, before once again highlighting its impressive gameplay. Then, What about the structure of Forspoken?, possible bosses and the importance of magic? Do not move because we have the answer to these questions and even other additional information.

Can you briefly describe the structure of Forspoken?

Raio Mitsuno (creative producer):

“As I said before, Forspoken is first and foremost a story-driven game. This is not a game where we ship out the world and let it freely explore from the start! There is an introduction, a narrative of how Frey came from New York to Athia’s world. So little by little we’re going to integrate the player into this set, and naturally the world will open up more and more as the story progresses, as Frey gains more powers.”

What role will the “Tantas”, the main antagonists of the game, play?

Raio Mitsuno (creative producer):

“The Tanta are key characters in the story. They were once benevolent rulers of the world of Athia, but something happened before the events of the title and they have now given themselves away. These are obstacles that Frey will have to face and overcome in order to find a way back home.”

“And yes, you were right. So many are bosses in Forspoken”.

Roosa Jokiaho (film art):

“We can also add that the Tantas will test Frey during boss fights, but they will also challenge her from a mental standpoint. So we can say that there is a kind of internal battle and the battle itself.

Takefumi Terada (co-director):

“Some Tantas will attack you directly and others will prefer to retreat and summon a monster. So you will face them in different ways.”

Can you tell us more about the world of Athia? How many zones does it have?

Takefumi Terada (co-director):

“In terms of gameplay, the fundamental core design of Athia’s world is that it’s a world where you have to be able to use magical parkour. First we decided (…) what parkour would allow the player to do and not do and we based all the design of the areas on that information.

“As for the areas of the game, Athia has four kingdoms.. They each have their own terrain and mood, and they’re also separated by the magic the player can use (…) The magic you need to cross each realm is tied to that realm.”

“For example, each area of the game has its own magical phenomenon. In the last zone, gravity does not obey the same rules as always, so you must search your inventory for the powers that will allow you to cross these obstacles (…) and that is where the fun of the game comes in, when one tries to to find something to overcome the problems of a kingdom”.

So Forspoken seems to rely heavily on magical experimentation, doesn’t it?

Raio Mitsuno (creative producer):

“Since we give access to about a hundred spells, it’s really up to the players to experiment and find the way they want to fight. And sometimes, as you experiment, you’ll find ways to use magic in a certain order for better effects. For example, there is a spell that traps enemies in a giant water orb, and when they are inside, they are susceptible to attack. Then you can find a way to use a spell and continue the attack with something else.”

Would you say that the desire to find new spells leads to exploration?

Takefumi Terada (co-director):

“In Forspoken, there are many different ways to get a spell: progressing through the story, exploring the map, completing a quest. So yeah, that’s probably one of the main things that drives the exploration, but there are also other things like the Athia files. There are plenty of reasons to want to explore.”
