We already knew almost everything about the new 100% electric compact from the Sino-British MG. Based on an unprecedented modular platform MSP (Modular Scalable Platform) dedicated to electric vehicles, the MG4 heralds the manufacturer’s ultimate strategy and paves the way for the 10 models expected by 2025.
Designed in the London studio, the MG4 is characterized by an original signature with slim headlamps and upward sloping gauges. The LED high and low beams form six vertical bands. The chiseled hood sinks over a closed grille with sharp lines, while the front spoiler sits on the nose of the car. The incisive styling extends to the design of the 172-LED taillamps, which are Y-shaped with a constellation-like pattern at the top of the light strip.
Ride height is fairly low with a sloping roofline that tops out at just 1.5m. The overall length of the MG is 4.28m by 1.83m wide. According to the manufacturer, the use of this new MSP platform not only makes it possible to reject the wheels at all four corners for better dynamism, but above all to integrate a battery. cell phone to pack among the thinnest on the market (110 mm), which lowers the center of gravity and improves road holding. The wheelbase also wins as it amounts to 2.7 m.
In the official images, four adults seem to fit comfortably in it, but we’ll see during our test if the interior space is relevant. Unfortunately, we can already issue a reservation about the size of the boot, which offers only 363 l (1177 l seats folded down).
Three finishes, two motors and two batteries
At the entry level, the Standard version is equipped with a 125 kW motor (170 hp, 250 Nm of torque) powered by a 51 kWh battery for 350 km of autonomy (WLTP cycle). The Comfort and Luxury versions are equipped with a motor with 150 kW (204 hp, 250 Nm) of torque powered by a 64 kW battery for a range that varies between 435 km (Luxury) and 450 km (Comfort), depending on the WLTP cycle.
In all cases, the speed is limited to 160 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is 7.7 seconds for the MG4 Standard, 7.9 seconds for the Comfort and Luxury trims. In these two finishes, the maximum charging power can reach up to 135 kW in DC, which allows you to go from 20 to 80% in 35 min. On the other hand, the smallest version is limited to 117 kW and the charging time is reduced to 40 min.
From the basic trim standard, the MG4 offers a good level of equipment. Drivers will be able to rely on Level 2 semi-autonomous driving with Traffic Sign Detection, Emergency Braking, Intelligent High Beam Management, Traffic Jam Assist, Fatigue Detection, and Lane Keeping Assist and Parking Assist. The Luxury trim adds a 360° camera, traffic and rear collision warning, emergency lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, and door open warning.
In all finishes there is a 7-inch instrument panel and a 10.25-inch central touch screen, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth, air conditioning and keyless start. Added to this for the Luxury finish is navigation with real-time traffic information, Wi-Fi access point, heat pump, induction smartphone charger, voice control and electric and heated front seats.
An aggressive price offer
Lastly, MG has an aggressive price list with a base price starting at €22,990 (€6,000 eco-bonus discounted) or a financing offer of €249 without listing for a 48-month LLD. Among other announcements from the manufacturer, but without further details, we learned that a 77 kWh version will appear, as well as a sports iteration of more than 400 hp with all-wheel drive and a shot from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 4 seconds. Finally, the long-awaited Cyberster electric roadster will be part of the next novelties.
