The Chinese manufacturer MG has just formalized its new electric car for France, a compact electric sedan, the MG4. This will be sold from 28,900 euros without bonuses, with a range of up to 500 km depending on the version.
The Chinese manufacturer MG has just formalized for Europe, including France, its new electric car, a compact sedan, the MG4. We have already known about this model for several months since it was presented in China in June, and then formalized in Europe a few weeks later. It was possible to order it from the beginning of August, but without knowing the prices. MG has just lifted the veil on the data sheet and prices for Europe and it’s a good surprise.
From 22,900 euros with the ecological bonus
MG thus announces that its MG4 will be sold, in France, from 28,900 euros. With the ecological bonus of 6,000 euros, the final price increases to 22,900 euros. This is very good news for the electric car in general, since it should allow access to electromobility to a greater number of households.
The Chinese manufacturer (or rather its European subsidiary, SAIC Motor Europe) also offers an LLD offer, at 249 euros per month, without listing (thanks to the bonus), for 48 months.
From 350 to 450 km of autonomy
At this price it is the MG4 in Standard finish, with its 51 kWh gross battery (LFP) and its autonomy of 350 km in the WLTP cycle. To achieve a range of 450 km you have to aim for the Comfort finish in €32,990 with the 64 kWh battery (NMC). The Luxury finish indicates a range of 435 km, probably because of its rear diffuser (quite present for the look), alleging €34,990.
Consumption varies between 16 kWh/100 km and 17 kWh/100 km depending on the version. Thus, surprisingly, the small battery needs more electrons to travel the same distance as the large battery. However, the weight is lower in the first, in 1,655kg vs. 1,685kg at the largest if we are to believe the technical data sheet.
This is undoubtedly due to the active grille, available in the Comfort trim. This makes it possible to modulate the opening of the latter according to the cooling needs of the battery, and thus reduce consumption when it is closed to obtain a drag coefficient of 0.27 vs. 0.287 when open.
A version with 500 km of autonomy in the boxes
The good surprise of this announcement is the arrival in the coming months of a version of the MG4 with a 77 kWh battery. Enough so that MG can prepare for the arrival of an MG4 with 500 km of autonomy. The new Cupra Born VZ XL seems to be aimed directly.
If fast charging is limited to 117 kW in the cheapest version, which claims 40 minutes to go from 10 to 80%power increases to 135 kW with the large 64 kWh battery, reducing charging time by five minutes for 35 minutes.
At home or in public terminals, you will have to settle for 6.6 kW for the basic finish compared to 11 kW for the rest of the versions.
A four-wheel drive version to come
The engine is not far behind, with a 125 kW (170 hp) engine in the entry level and 150 kW (204 hp) in the rest of the trims. The two motors send 250Nm of torque to the wheels and are positioned on the rear axle, making the MG4 rear-wheel drive. 0 to 100 km/h is advertised as 7.7 seconds for the small battery and 7.9 seconds for the large one. Top speed is limited to 160 km/h.
The famous sports version of Triumph is also planned for Europe, but without further details on the calendar, with two electric motors that will provide a power of 455 CV and a torque of 600 Nm to reach 0 to 100 km/h in as little time as possible. only 3.8 seconds.
A compact sedan
For the dimensions, we must count on a length of 4,287 m, a width of 1,836 m (without mirrors) and a height of 1,504 m. The wheelbase of 2,705 m and the absence of a central tunnel it should allow to take advantage of a beautiful space on board. The mark indicates a trunk with a capacity of 363 liters.
Regarding comfort, MG shows us the presence of a five-link independent rear suspension as well as a dynamic adjustment of the chassis. A feature normally reserved for much more expensive models. The rear motor allows a relatively short turning radiusonly 10.6m.
a connected car
Inside, on the back of a 7-pouces scale, the steering wheel was found by the combined instrumentation office, and a 10.25-pouces scale was found by the milieu for the infotainment with notamment a navigation system with trafic in real time. Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist are present for level 2 autonomous driving, using radars and cameras.
In the Luxury version, the presence of the the heat pump should allow to increase autonomy in winter. MG thus announces an increase in autonomy of almost 10% depending on the weather. Be careful though: battery preheating is only available with the most expensive version. This means that in winter, the speed of charging the car at fast charging stations could be lower in other versions.
A little extra: the MG4 is capable of towing a trailer (or a small caravan), with a maximum of 500 kg.
First deliveries in October 2022
The MG4 is now available to order on the manufacturer’s website, with a 7-year warranty. It will be visible in dealerships in the coming weeks, with a total of 686 dealerships in 26 European countries and 840 by the end of the year. The first deliveries are scheduled for October.
against the competition
The MG4 could well prove to be a commercial success. In fact, at this price, we don’t find much at the moment. However, we can mention the Renault Zoé, from 33,700 euros, with a range of 395 km. But it is not the same electric car at all, with much less equipment and lower performance.
The Peugeot e-208 is also a good competitor, from 33,000 euros in the Like finish and its 400 km of autonomy. Once again, there are fewer technologies on board and less space. We will have to wait for the full test of the MG4 to form a more pronounced opinion.
