Host country of this final phase of theEuroBasketME’Germany had to rub elbows Greece of Giannis Antetokounmpo expect to reach the quarterfinals of “their” competition for the fourth time in their history, and the first time since 2005.
Against this formidable Greek team, which dreamed of reaching the Euro Cup semi-finals for the tenth time in its history, and for the first time since 2009, the mannschaft managed to stop the course of the companions of Giannis Antetokounmpo (31 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals).
Thanks to the magnificent performance of dennis schroder (26 points and 8 assists), impeccable in his role as national leader, and thanks to an excellent second half, dominated by head and shoulders.
Shocked, Greece turns its back thanks to Giannis
Before the boiling public of the Mercedes-Benz Arena, this quarterfinal comes out very, very strong in any case. This is evidenced in particular by the insolent success of all the Germans on 3 points: 4/4 early on, then finally 8/10 throughout the first quarter.
Despite the aggressiveness of the opposing defense, and especially the catches of two (or even three), Giannis Antetokounmpo was not disarmed in this hostile atmosphere. suddenly in power and one, the “Greek Monster” proves to be admirable in keeping the Greeks in touch. Selfless, he also doesn’t forget to serve his teammates wide open, behind the arc or in the paint.
Still, after ten rather rhythmic minutes, Germany is in the lead (31-27). Increasingly physical, the encounter then balances out, but the mannschaft stays ahead, thanks to their devilishly effective attacking collective.
Without panicking, Greece kept a respectable distance from their opponent, grabbing several essential offensive rebounds to do so. Precious with their 3-point skill, Giannoulis Larentzakis and Andreas Obst answer each other in a duel of shots but, as the clock ticks down, Dimitris Itoudis’s players gain an advantage over Gordon Herbert’s.
It then takes several hits of the throttle from Dennis Schröder to revive the Germans late in the half, while Giannis Antetokounmpo and Tyler Dorsey lead the Greeks into the opposite field. Finally, in a (very) distant basket over the buzzer by Kostas Sloukas, the visitors advanced two possessions at halftime (61-57).
Greek ship capsizes in 3-point rain…
As at the start of the match, Germany came back from the locker room unplayable in attack, where they imposed a lot of rhythm, and especially in defense, where they clearly took a step up. Such an effective recipe necessarily results in the score, since Greece takes a sting… 20-1 in seven minutes!
Without a solution and without being able to react, because mentally affected, Giannis Antetokounmpo and his family are down on the scoreboard, while Franz Wagner and his teammates are in a state of grace, in particular 3 points behind. Despite the wall of defenders in front of him (he suffered a five-man catch!), the “Greek monster” attempted to rouse his troops, on his own record.
But nothing helped: indeed, the difference widened at the end of the third quarter (83-71).
Giannis and Schroder expelled!
Without Giannis Antetokounmpo, who stayed briefly to rest, Greece is trying to contain the impact, even to recover. To no avail, promptly forcing Dimitris Itoudis to return his Superstar Pushed, the “Greek monster” struggles, but his teammates are in the hole, while the mannschaft he leans on a gala bus and keeps shooting in all directions.
Finally, after long minutes where the two teams gave up blow by blow, it was the Germans triumphing before a raving crowd (107-96). Above all, for drinking the cup to the dregs, Giannis Antetokounmpo was sent off with five minutes remaining, for a second unsportsmanlike foul. Note that Dennis Schröder will join him a few moments later, due to a second technical foul.
Too skilful (17/21 in 3 points, 18/21 in shots), too collectively armed (five players in 10 points or more) and too strong for the Greeks, Germany joins Spain in the semifinals of “their” Eurobasket.
